Transmission tower erection in Korea is the assembly of the steel lattice tower that supports overhead transmission lines, built on the completed foundation and safety facilities. The erection method chosen changes the site area needed, the equipment checks and the hazards completely, so preparation is half the job. This guide covers two stages — preparation and assembly.

Common Pre-Work Review
Before work, review the design documents, the tower manufacturer’s drawings, the construction specifications and KEPCO design standards and field manuals, and prepare a method statement before work starts that is briefed to everyone involved. Prepare an earth resistance tester, utility locator, coating thickness gauge, survey instruments, total station, staff, level, tension meter, torque meter and hydraulic gauge, and plant such as mobile cranes, tower cranes, gin poles, excavators, forklifts and winches. Safety equipment includes gas detectors, site partitions, guidance signs, fall-prevention nets and fences, hard hats, safety vests, insulating gloves, safety shoes and harnesses.
1. Erection Preparation
- Select the erection method considering tower size, total plant and materials, access routes, complaints and cost.
- Secure the work area considering erection plant, working radius, soft ground, slope, crops and complaints.
- For the derrick method, secure an area matching the equipment’s working radius and inspect the hoisting wire diameter and any splices.
- For the mobile crane method, review working radius, rated load by boom angle, maximum hook height and maximum lift weight.
- For the tower crane method, check the tension and direction of the inclined and horizontal guys that fix the base section.
- When installing a gin pole or erection crane, control the site to prevent falling or toppling.
- Compact the erection crane foundation thoroughly so it does not settle before erection ends, and check the slewing radius for hazards in advance.
Pre-Checks by Erection Method
| Method | Checks before work |
|---|---|
| Derrick | Site area for working radius; hoisting wire diameter and splices |
| Mobile crane | Working radius, rated load by boom angle, max hook height, max lift weight |
| Tower crane | Tension and direction of inclined and horizontal guys fixing the base |
| Gin pole / erection crane | Fall and topple prevention, foundation compaction, hazards in slewing radius |
| Helicopter | Safety requirements, obstacle clearance, cargo sling balance |
Terms: main legs (주주재) are the corner members; a restricted-base tower (근계철탑) has a narrowed base for tight sites; mixed arms (짝암) means different arm types on one tower; leg extensions (계각재) are leg-end members where leg heights differ; redundant members (대변재) are secondary members inside the horizontals.
2. Tower Assembly
- Survey the tower type, the height of restricted-base towers and any mixed arm types, reflect them in the erection plan and secure suitable plant.
- Before filling and tightening bolts, confirm that stub values are within tolerance.
- On steep mountain sites, assemble the main legs one panel at a time from the bottom in the leg-extension section to prevent bending.
- Lift members with belt slings during body assembly to avoid damage.
- Decide whether to assemble arms in one piece or in sections based on ground assembly position and lift weight.
- Control the site carefully so that no members are missing.
- When helicopters are used, confirm safety requirements and keep clearances to obstacles.
- Carry heavy loads with a cargo sling so they stay balanced and do not slip.
FAQ
How is the erection method chosen?
By weighing tower size, plant and material quantities, access, site conditions, complaints and cost to choose between derrick, mobile crane, tower crane and other methods. Each method needs a different site area and checks.
Why are steep-site towers assembled one panel at a time?
Assembling the main legs in sequence from the bottom of the leg-extension section prevents the tower from bending.
Why use belt slings to lift members?
Lifting directly with wire rope can damage galvanizing or deform members, so belt slings protect them.

Summary
The most common mistake in tower erection is choosing a method without checking its equipment limits — rated loads, guy tensions and foundation settlement. Preparation depends on method-specific site and plant checks; assembly on stub verification, bottom-up sequencing and member protection. For the foundation stage, see Transmission Tower Foundation Construction. For pre-construction preparation, see Transmission Line Construction Planning.
