Distribution equipment installation in Korea covers safely installing pole-mounted and ground-level transformers, switches and pad-mounted equipment. Each type has different priorities: connections and drop leads for pole-mounted transformers, control circuits and interlocks for switches, and excavation, foundations and cable terminations for pad-mounted units. This guide covers each in turn.

Common Pre-Work Review
First confirm the relevant laws, rules and regulations, the installation drawings, the construction methods in the design documents and the contract. For pole-mounted transformers, every worker must understand the full sequence from transport and unloading to installation and testing. Installation uses cranes, augers and winches; prepare a multimeter, insulation resistance tester, earth resistance tester, angle gauge, dielectric withstand tester and EMF meter. Wear hard hats, safety vests, safety shoes, insulating gloves, harnesses and lanterns; materials include sleeves, compression lugs, sleeve covers and insulating tapes. Receiving inspection is completed beforehand in Distribution Equipment Preparation.
1. Pole-Mounted Transformer Installation
- Review the shop drawings to confirm the transformer rating, connection method, cooling method and tap changer fitting.
- Position the pole-mounted transformer and, before installation, check the insulating oil, insulation, tap setting and nameplate.
- Visually confirm that the transformer is set up safely for test operation and service conditions.
- After fitting the hanger band, install lifting hooks, adapters and similar fittings to protect bushings and the transformer from impact.
- Connect the secondary terminals to suit the supply system.
- Mount the cut-out switch (COS) on the cross-arm and connect the primary drop lead to the bushing.
2. Distribution Switch Installation
- Review the switch shop drawings to confirm rating, control circuits, and transport and packing units.
- Prepare a wiring list — including control box and interlock connections — from the drawings, and install the switch and control box.
- Ground the switch body and control box through the earthing terminals, and connect the auxiliary switches, closing-power cable and control cables.
- Install a cross-arm to secure the lead wires, then fix and connect them.
- Confirm that the switch equipment is set up safely for test operation and service conditions.
- After installation, check for mechanical and electrical faults, control circuit interlocks and breaker operation.
- Measure the switch dielectric strength and control circuit insulation resistance, and record the results.
3. Pad-Mounted Equipment Installation
- Review the installation drawings, prepare the method statement and material list, evaluate them, and visit the site where needed.
- Apply for road excavation and occupancy permits under the Road Act.
- Mark the planned excavation line, set width and depth for each condition, confirm buried services with a locator, and excavate.
- Check the foundation level and build the structural foundation.
- After setting the equipment, terminate cables on the bushings using cable accessories, and carry out a withstand voltage test to confirm there are no faults.
- Inspect accessory installation, backfill compaction, structure waterproofing and earthing, and prepare an inspection report.
Pad-mounted equipment includes pad-mounted transformers and switches. Foundations use cast concrete, caissons, piles or screw anchors; if the foundation is not level, correct it with dry mortar or sand before setting the base block.
Post-Installation Checks by Equipment
| Equipment | What to confirm after installation |
|---|---|
| Pole-mounted transformer | Secondary connection, tap position, COS and primary drop lead, bushing protection fittings |
| Switch | Mechanical and electrical condition, interlock and breaker operation, dielectric strength, control circuit insulation |
| Pad-mounted equipment | Withstand voltage test after cable termination, backfill compaction, waterproofing, earthing |
| Pad-mounted transformer insulation | Primary–earth, secondary–earth and primary–secondary |
FAQ
What must be checked before installing a pole-mounted transformer?
Insulating oil condition, insulation, tap position and nameplate data. Also confirm the connection and cooling methods match the shop drawings.
Which tests follow switch installation?
Check mechanical and electrical condition, interlocks and breaker operation, then measure and record the switch dielectric strength and control circuit insulation resistance.
Do pad-mounted installations need road occupancy permits?
Yes, if the road is excavated or occupied, permits under the Road Act are required. Fix the permit schedule before construction starts.

Summary
The most common mistakes in distribution equipment installation are skipping tests once the equipment is in place, and neglecting the level and waterproofing of pad-mounted foundations. Pole-mounted transformers depend on connections and drop leads, switches on interlocks and insulation measurements, and pad-mounted equipment on excavation, foundations and withstand testing. For pre-construction preparation, see Distribution Line Construction Planning. A Korean version of this guide is available here.
